Not one of the best Alburgue stays last night at Roncevalles, but the old monastery was quite iconic and a beautiful building! However, there were loads of people. The pilgrim meal was fairly basic and we were rushed along and out of the hall as soon as possible. Although we had a pod for -12 for 7 of us it wasn’t very private and it was very noisy, so we didn’t get a lot of sleep!
The walk started off quite gently along the road and then off over open countryside with the mountains in the distance and the sound of the bells around the horses necks accompanying us.
There were two stiffish upward climbs and then a longer steeper climb. We meandered across streams and through woodland with lots of wild flowers. It was sunny and hot but with a cool breeze and often we were in the shade of woods.
Got quite sunburned on my left arm and shoulder, not realising with the cool breeze how intense the sun was.
The downward track into Zubiri was quite steep and treacherous down a moving rock path, quite easy to slip and hurt yourself badly, but incredibly beautiful! One of my favourite parts of the walk, although incredibly dangerous in wet weather, and many pilgrims have been injured walking down it.
We have our own communal room with showers and toilet, so much better and hopefully we’ll all get a good nights sleep. We’re all feeling achy and stiff at the end of today, but have had a good meal tonight with lots of red wine!
