Will I Make It?

Tales of there and back again

Apr 2022

2nd Day. Borda to Roncevalles - 17km. 800m to 1400m

Up at 7am. Misty over the mountains but could just see the sun coming through.

Communal breakfast and then start a gentle climb ever upwards through the clouds.

Very very pretty start to the walk, Pyrenean horses with bells round their necks accompanied our walk. Vultures flew over head, delicate pretty flowers along the path. Varied countryside along this route. Desolate and rocky at times and green and colourful. Shadows of clouds flew over the valleys.

Sometimes a strong breeze blew the clouds around us and we could n’y see where we were, other times it was sunny and warm. Stopped for many drink and rest breaks and to eat the lunch packed by Lorenzo.

Walked into Spain! Eventually we were walking downhill, initially steeply down a rocky incline and then more gently and very prettily to lower ground with flowing streams that looked cool and inviting for tired feet!

At this point I missed my footing in a rut in the path and landed on my bum, having given my ankle a bit of a pull! It’ll probably be sore tomorrow.

Arrived at the huge monastery at Roncevalles, where we will sleep tonight. Went to the bar to wait for the others before checking in, finding our beds and showering, ready for our pilgrim dinner tonight back at the bar.

Usual pilgrim dinner, basic, edible and filling! Sat with other pilgrims including an 87 yr old lady doing her 24th pilgrimage! Something to aspire to!
